Cautious Optimism at Gothenburg Furniture Fair: Buyers are confident about making purchases again

The furniture industry is steadily improving. At Gothenburg Furniture Fair, both exhibitors and visitors expressed increased confidence in the future.
– “Buyers were much more positive this year. They dared to invest in new models and make deals at the fair,” said exhibitor Dan Buhrén.

Gothenburg Furniture Fair, held from 16th to 18th September, is a specialised purchasing fair organised by the Swedish Exhibition & Congress Centre in collaboration with MIBO, the Furniture and Interiors Business Association.

Interest in this year’s fair reached a record high: 78 exhibitors attended, compared to 68 last year, marking a 15% increase. The total exhibition area also increased significantly.

– “The stands were consistently well-designed and impressive. The exhibitors were very business-focused, and it’s fascinating to witness their commitment,” said Klas Pettersson, Business Manager for Gothenburg Furniture Fair.

– “Many of them also reported good sales figures, and there’s an optimistic consensus about the future for retail.”

This year’s fair attracted more than 1,800 visitors, another increase from the previous year. Among the visitors and exhibitors, a large proportion continued to come from Norway, Denmark and Finland.

– “The strong international interest in the Gothenburg Furniture Fair is very encouraging and strengthens the fair as a Nordic meeting place,” said Klas.

The open stage seminar programme was extended from last year. Interior Designer and Feng Shui Consultant Jannice Wistrand drew a full house when she spoke about how we can feel better and help our senses flourish through well-chosen colours and furniture.

Author and climate activist Maria Soxbo also attracted great interest. She urged furniture companies to start thinking circularly, reduce waste, and facilitate recycling to retain their customers.

– “We noticed that this message resonated with exhibitors, who have started thinking and acting more sustainably: for example, Bröderna Andersson’s offering reupholstering services for furniture.”

Ahead of this year’s fair, the cooperation agreement between the Swedish Exhibition & Congress Centre and MIBO was also extended.

– “This means we will continue to organise Gothenburg Furniture Fair for several more years, which we, of course, look forward to,” said Klas Pettersson.

– “We hope this is also appreciated by the exhibitors, who seemed consistently satisfied this year. Several have already booked their stand for next year.” In other words, planning is already in full swing for next year’s fair, which will take place from 1st to 3rd September 2025.
